Ecosia: Search to plant trees

Search with a tree-planting purpose

Ecosia: Search to plant trees is a mobile search and browsing app for people who want web searches to support environmental projects. It fits users who prefer a search tool with a stated climate focus rather than a service built mainly around personalisation and advertising data. Search ads help fund tree-planting and other climate-related work, turning ordinary searches into a small contribution without requiring a separate donation routine.

What it includes

• A search bar and mobile browsing experience for everyday web use.
• Search encryption and a policy of not selling user profiles to advertisers.
• A tree counter that shows the environmental impact associated with activity in the app.
• Public financial reporting, giving users information about how the service directs its profits.
• Infrastructure supported by solar power, with the company stating that its solar plants produce more energy than its servers consume.

Who it suits

Ecosia is a practical choice for users who want a familiar way to search while supporting climate action. It may also appeal to people who place more weight on privacy and organisational transparency than on highly tailored search results. As with any search service, results can vary by query, and users who depend on very specific local or highly personalised information may find another engine more suitable.

At a glance

Listed in Communication, Ecosia is developed by Ecosia and has recorded 10,000,000+ installs. Its score is 4.16 from 186,557 ratings. That places the app among established mobile search options, while its environmental funding model remains the main reason to choose it over a conventional browser or search app.
